As mother’s–or should I say as humans–we have so many different roles that we have to balance. I’ve been struggling to find that balance lately.
Right now my husband is in school getting his Ph.d. in Genetics. Family is super important to us and so we didn’t want to wait until he finished school to start having children. Obviously… we have two and another one due in just a couple weeks!!
However, supporting a family on a student’s stipend is impossible. So I have been working very hard to find ways to work and make money from home. This has included taking time to develop skills that I didn’t know that I would ever have… or even enjoy having!
It’s true that our trials push us to become better in ways we may never have imagined.
Unfortunately, that means that my to-do list is a mile long every day. And I’m constantly pushing to-dos from one day to the next. Which can be super depressing and very stressful.
I thrive off of crossing things off my list! It can almost be debilitating to look at my to-do list that has 20 items on it that seem so important and only have 2-3 items crossed off.
On those days, I sometimes turn to my husband and say… I got NOTHING done today.
He often looks at me like I’m crazy and then he lists off all of these things that I did get done.
He tells me…
- You got Lanae ready for the day and did her hair! She was adorable.
- You took the kids to the park.
- You fed them lunch.
- You started the laundry… and I’ll go switch it right now so you can cross that off your list too! 🙂
- You did a science experiment.
- You held Owen when he was hurt.
- You cleaned off your desk…
- You read to the kids after naps.
- You went shopping for groceries!
- You made dinner.
- You built castles out of legos.
- You showered….
Sometimes I will think to myself… Yes, but those things aren’t a big deal. They weren’t even on my list!!
But they should have been.
Motherhood is such a huge blessing and I don’t want to miss out on all of those little things.
Because it’s the little things that really matter. Those little things are so much more important than all the things on my to-do list. And it is those little things that bring joy and happiness as they help provide a little balance in my life!

You are amazing! Don’t ever get discouraged by not getting everything done in your day! I get that way sometimes, too. I love crossing things off of lists! And sometimes it’s hard when other things come up, but if you remember the things you did that you do every day, it’s quite an accomplishment! Also, I can’t believe it’s almost baby time! Yay!

Oh thanks Chelsea!! I’m trying to do better at remembering EVERYTHING that I did and not just the things I crossed off the to-do list. It makes it so much easier to sit and play with my kids when I realize that is SUPER important too!
