I’m excited for the New Year! But also a little nervous. Our family is going to go through some big changes this year. Some overwhelming changes… And I don’t feel very prepared for them right now!
That is one reason I love goals. They help you prepare for and become better in this thing we call LIFE.
I love seeing improvement and I love having something to work towards. But sometimes it can get discouraging when you don’t see improvement.
My husband and I were getting a little frustrated with ourselves two years ago when we were feeling overwhelmed and stuck. It seemed like we just kept failing at our goals and that made us want to try even less to reach them.
However, at the beginning of last year, I had the idea to incorporate a weekly follow-up into our Sunday Planning Meeting. Every Sunday we sit down and we have a little meeting to discuss our family’s needs, we started this several years ago when we realized we needed better communication in our marriage.
It was hard at first to get into the habit of sitting down and discussing the week and the family’s needs, but over time, it became a huge help to us in our marriage. Better communication as a couple usually means less contention and more kind thoughts and feelings… You know what I mean right?
It helped us to be more organized and accomplish more during the week AND it also helped us to be more accountable as we were working towards our goals!
This past Sunday we set our BIG New Year’s Resolutions… Our vision for ourself by the end of the year. The ideal… What we will work towards all year. We used these amazing printables from The Dating Divas.
In the Dating Divas Goal pack, there is a Vision Board that we used to help us with our resolutions. It is so simple and perfect for us because it is already divided into 6 categories, which made it easy to use and compliment our Weekly Improvement Plan!
I also love the daily goal tracker sheets for specific S.M.A.R.T goals.
Scott and I are going to set 2 trackable goals each month that we can actually document and see progress. I’m so encouraged!!
If you haven’t made your New Year resolutions you should definitely check out the Year of Goals pack from the Dating Divas!
Our planning meeting has followed many different agendas and included many different aspects over the past couple of years. At first it was more of a “did I meet your needs this week?” and a discussion of the weeks calendar. Now, it’s a little more intense, but we’ve gotten into a flow and it really works for us!
Now we set smaller goals each week in every category to help us reach our vision for the end of the year.
I wanted to share some of the things we discuss and the Improvement Plan that I created for us to follow this year.
Here is a list of what is included on the Family Improvement plan!
- How did we do (on our goals) last week?
- What are we grateful for from last week?
- Set some goals for the upcoming week in the following areas: health, family, personal, marriage, educational and spiritual.
- Discuss this weeks calendar.
- Specific needs this week.
- Who is in charge of date night this week? (super important)
- What’s on the menu this week?
- Weekly Menu planning sheet
Yes! I seek help from my husband when planning out the menu. I do most of the meal planning at the end of each month on my own, but its very rough because I don’t know what each day will bring. So I basically make a list of all the meals we will have for the month and then each week, I plug them in on the day it makes sense… I’ll be sharing some meal planning tips, tricks and a helpful little cheat sheet later this week as a part of the Fit Mama Series!
Maybe this can help you be organized and motivated as a family too… If you want to try it, go ahead and download the free printable below!

I’ve been trying to menu plan more, it’s still more of a last minute in the super market thing where I try to actually buy stuff that will make meals, but its making a difference. Bringing hubby in on the meal planning is a great idea. Thanks
Carisa says
Thanks Stella! Good luck with the meal planning. It can definitely be overwhelming to plan. That’s why I just make a general list and then take it a week at a time.

I’m always so bad at planning because I just keep flipping it and changing the plans, lol. This might help! I like to get my husband’s input on the weekly meal plans, too, when I do make them.

I’m so glad that I’m not the only one that pressures my husband to help out with meal planning 😉

I do meal planning the same way! Instead of choosing at the beginning what day everything will happen, I just make sure I have enough options in the house.
