One of our family traditions is making a pinata around Easter time. The first year we did it we went all out and made a bunny pinata. It was pretty amazing!
The next year we had high hopes and big plans and our pinata completely fell apart. In our discouragement we decided to take a break from the pinata tradition for a year. That’s when we had this clever idea to make a simple DIY cereal box pinata. It looks really cool and can be made in just a couple of minutes. Okay…. Maybe more like 20 minutes.
All you need is a cereal box, duct tape, tissue paper and more tape. And of course string or twine to hold it up.
We attached the twine first so we could secure it tightly with duct tape. We fortified the top of the box with duct tape to make it sturdy.
Then we cut strips of tissue paper about 3 inches wide and each strip we cut a slit every half inch or so to make it more textured. That’s what give the pinata a little fluff!
Then we wrapped one strip of tissue paper around at a time. Taping it as we went! We continued the process until we reached the top.
We decided to embellish with little tissue paper flowers at the top! Voila!
I love all the colors on this one we made and can’t wait to destroy it at Easter time!! I’m sure the kids will enjoy destroying it too! This one will be a lot easier to watch get destroyed than our beloved bunny pinata that we slaved over for days.
We always make pinatas at Easter time, but this could be used any time of the year… Just change the colors to match whatever season or holiday you’re wanting to celebrate!
Next year I think we are going to try our hand at mini pinatas!!
