I love the Food Network… Probably because I love food! I love the creativity that is involved in a lot of the food competitions. While traveling in San Diego 4 years ago, I first saw Cupcake Wars and it immediately became one of my favorite shows. I hadn’t really been a cupcake fan before. Then last summer, I rediscovered Cupcake Wars on Hulu and thought that it would be fun to have a Cupcake Wars group date night challenge!
We organized a Cupcake Wars challenge with our friends in Raleigh. Scott and I both made cupcakes for it… But then we ended up taking our son to the hospital. So we ended up with 48 cupcakes in our fridge and no party! 🙁
When we moved we decided that we wanted to try doing the Cupcake Wars group date night challenge with our new friends! This time we decided that each couple would make 1 set of cupcakes. I didn’t want to be stuck with 48 cupcakes again if for some reason we had to cancel…
Anyway. The first thing you will need to do to host your own Cupcake Wars is send out invitations. I like to organize parties on Facebook so I don’t have to send a physical invitation. Trying to save trees, here! Or maybe I’m just lazy… Who knows? You can use the invite below as a JPG, by clicking on it and saving it to your desktop or you can click below to get the FREE printables that I created.

The great thing about this date night is that it is totally customizable. You can take it easy and just have everyone bring their favorite cupcakes. You could also set a theme like they do in the actual Cupcake Wars and have everyone create a cupcake masterpiece that fits into that theme.
Say for example that your theme is “outdoors.” Then you could come up with some great cupcakes like this S’mores Campfire cupcake. That looks delicious, right? For a themed Cupcake Wars date night you can incorporate some fun activities to go along with the competition. For an outdoors theme, you could play night games like “kick-the-can” or “sardines.”
Of course, you will want to have some kind of judging of the cupcakes to make it an actual Cupcake War. I created a judging sheet to help you do just that. Now in order for you to have a fair competition, you’ll have to set some ground rules. Our rules were simple–both husband and wife had to help with the creation of the cupcake. But you can stipulate whatever rules you’d like to for your competition!
For our cupcakes, we made these delicious Coconut-Lime Cupcakes from the amazing ladies at Our Best Bites… They are our favorite cupcake, ever! We included Lanae and Owen in our cupcake making and test-tasting process. This was Owen’s first experience tasting a lime. I don’t think he was too impressed, but we got a good laugh out of it!
For our most recent Cupcake Wars date night, we decided to take it easy and just get to know our friends a little better since we’re still new to the area. It was the first time we got a babysitter for a date night in a very long time. It was so nice to have a grown-up conversation with no interruptions! We had so much fun and loved the cupcakes so much that we will most definitely be hosting a more competitive Cupcake Wars in the future!
I would love to hear how your version of the Cupcake Wars turns out! 🙂
