We’ve been thinking more and more about chores as Lanae is getting older and so much more helpful. The other day I was mopping the floor and she asked if she could help… Um. YES!!!
Then there was that morning that I came downstairs and she had sorted all the clean laundry into piles and was starting to fold it. Yes, I did have several piles of laundry in my front room that had just been sitting there for days… it happens occasionally.
As I watch her choosing to be helpful I realize that she is capable of so much more than I ask her to do and heaven knows that I could definitely use a little help around the house!
People have such strong opinions about chores… whether kids should have them, whether kids should be paid for them, etc. I have my own views about chores and allowance. But all I will say here is that I think having kids do chores is both awesome and necessary. They need to know that they are responsible for helping maintain the home that they live in.
Oh and we’ll be shipping them off on their own in 18 years (or less). So we should probably help them learn how to do a few things for themselves along the way. I met plenty of college students who didn’t really know how to do much in the kitchen and subsequently made poor choices in regards to their nutrition. I know that I want my kids to be confident and make good choices as they take care of themselves!
Back to chores. How do you know what chores they are ready to do!?
With a little research and our own experience… my husband and I put together these age appropriate chore checklists to refer to. They’ll be super helpful, because sometimes we’re not necessarily thinking about what else to have our kids do.
Now when we feel like they are ready for something new, we have a quick reference.
I already know a few things that I’m going to start having Lanae do around the house in the next couple of weeks!
