During the months of February and March we spent most Saturday’s working outside on our bed frame and the kids would play outside while we were working.
The first thing that they would ask to do was ride their bikes. At first, the bike riding only lasted for 10-15 minutes and then they would be bored. There was only so much walking a bike up and down the side walk that a kid can do!!
But the bikes were still something exciting that they looked forward to while Scott and I worked. Just from 15 minutes each Saturday, Lanae gained confidence and balance and was starting to gain a little speed.
One Saturday near the end of March the kids were on their second 15 minutes of bike riding for the day and wanted to bike to the bright purple tree around the corner.
I walked with them to the tree and then on the way back I told Lanae that she should try to lift her feet off the ground while going down the hill. This was a huge turning point for her as she realized that she could go faster by pushing off with her feet.
**All of these pictures were taken at the end of March.
In the past two months Lanae has developed much better balance and can now push off with her feet and then balance for 10-15 seconds. She can go pretty quick and will ride her bike for 20-30 minutes straight! She can keep up with me walking at a pretty brisk pace when I work out! She loves it. And I love that it is something that she feels confident and excited doing.
Lanae still has a lot to learn as she still loses her balance and control of her Strider bike. She has had two crashes because she sometimes gets going too fast… Both pretty minor thankfully. And each time she has wanted to get right back on her bike!
Before Lanae learned her new skills, Owen would just walk his bike. After Lanae’s discovery we finally got him to sit down on the seat occasionally.
He got a little discouraged being left behind all the time, so we explained that in order to go faster he needed to sit down on the seat and push off with his feet. He is getting better at staying focused and sitting. I think his coordination is starting to kick in, but he is still much slower than Lanae!
At least he is having fun, right?
